I was born October 14, 1961 in Los Angeles, California. I grew up in the south bay city of Gardena in the 60’s and 70’s which afforded me an incredible “melting pot” of influences and ethnicities very early in life. Also, my parents (Charles & Margaret Mims) recognized the signs of a musical “gift” on me around age 4 and then began surrounding me with musical instruments. My mother always  kept a piano in the house which I naturally gravitated towards. At age 9 (4th grade) mom set me up for private piano lessons and I began playing the trombone in school. I excelled on both instruments. I was also quite the sports fanatic (football, basketball, baseball etc.) as a kid but just was never “the best” at it as music was my “true” passion. In 1975 (age 14) my dad purchased my first bass guitar. I found myself obsessed with the instrument and never wanted to put it down (which I never did even until this very day). Through junior and senior high school I soaked up as many musical influences as I could in multiple genres. From funk to rock to jazz to classical: the 70’s was an AMAZING time “musically” and a challenging time to grow up.

Shortly after graduation from Gardena High School in 1979 the Corney Mims/BombBass journey entered the professional ranks. In 1981 my career on the L.A. session scene began with a track on Peaches & Herb’s “Sayin Something” album entitled “Freeway” produced by Freddie Perren. Things blossomed through the 80’s leading to such projects as Michael Jackson’s “Bad” album in 1987, Kenny Loggins’ “Back To Avalon” tour (1988-1990) and a songwriter/publisher contract with the ATV music group (owned by Michael Jackson). It was also during the 80’s that life for me began to take negative turns associated with a very “accepted” and popular drug and alcohol culture directly linked to the music biz. I struggled for many years and was eventually introduced to “recovery” in 1999.

Now a 3 time Grammy Award winner, I’ve performed live, in studio, and on television with well-known artists throughout the music industry. My list of credits reads like a who’s who of the music industry’s elite. Names like Michael Jackson, Kenny Loggins, Natalie Cole, En Vogue, George Michael, Brandy, Phil Collins, Snoop Dogg and Beyonce only scratch the surface of the accomplishments.

More recent credits include co-writer of the title track for bay area artist H.E.R.’s American Music and Grammy award nominated album entitled “The Back Of My Mind”, bass guitarist/ vocalist with 3 time Grammy Award winner Fantastic Negrito’s The Last Days Of Oakland (2016), Please Don’t Be Dead (2018), Have You Lost Your Mind Yet? (2020), co-songwriter on Mary J. Blige's 2006 smash single “Enough Crying”, and co-writer/ producer of LLCoolJ's 2005 hit single "Hush.
